JL

Jeremy Lee, John Mark

Jeremy, 22, discovered music in primary school when his father bought him his first hi-fi set. In conversations with his mother, Jeanne, she describes him as reserved and shy, a child who spoke little. He makes his debut musical performance in Paul the Musical.

Currently a student of applied drama and psychology in Singapore Polytechnic, Jeremy enjoys reading literary classics, scientific books, and National Geographic. Jeremy is also a big fan of Coldplay and listens to anything he can get his ears on, including the sound of traffic at 1 am.

In his free time, Jeremy enjoys going for supper, watching films, attending concerts and designing his room. Jeremy believes in being present at family meals, being there for close friends and setting aside time for personal reflection.

As a trombonist with the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, he has performed in numerous local and overseas classical concerts since 2003. Jeremy enjoys travelling and believes that life should be lived in the present.

Jeremy praises God for His goodness, for making him unique and for His kindness for the presence of his family and friends in his life.

PD

Philip Grant Devlin, Gemaliel

Philip, proudly Australian, arrived in Singapore to pursue his high-tech marketing career in 1997. This was inevitable given his keen interest in Asian Culture. With a flair for languages, he intuitively picked up spoken Mandarin and Bahasa.

A graduate in Electronic Engineering from RMIT, he combined his technical prowess with his first love for music by starting his own band Benton Frey. Philip enjoyed playing many gigs within Melbourne’s vibrant independent music scene.

Philip, throughout his primary and secondary schooling, actively participated in school musicals and plays. Highlights being his portrayal of Kurt von Trapp in “The Sound of Music” and Joseph in “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”. He continues to practice his craft within his work by producing corporate training videos and launch events.

An active sportsman at the Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) and a community member, he now calls Singapore "home” and is proud to have represented Singapore as part of the Singapore Hockey Federation (SHF) President’s XI for hockey. He is happily married to a supportive wife (herself an actor) and is blessed with two darling children. He and his family are also active members of the Church of St Mary of the Angels.

Philip is grateful for this opportunity to continue his passion for music and the stage. He enjoys being a part of the production team and looks forward to the day when the entire team can share Paul the Musical with the world. He thanks the Lord Almighty for blessing the team with direction and passion.

WH

Wishnu Hartandi, High Priest

Wishnu is your regular Joe employee who has a huge passion in performing arts. Though he currently holds a day job as a corporate employee, he cites stage plays as his true home.

A diploma holder of Theatre and Creative writing from Drury University in the United States, Wishnu had done numerous plays - both as a technical crew and as a cast member. His most recent outing was as a performer in the Indonesian Arts Festival 2007. His other credits include Wilhoit Theatre’s production of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Proof by David Auburn, The Actor’s Voice by Richard Greenberg and others.

When he is not at work or rehearsing for Paul The Musical, Wishnu likes to workout at a local gym or take a jog around the Holland Village and Buona Vista areas. He also enjoys writing plays and is currently pursuing his MFA in dramatic writing.

Blessed with an opportunity to be involved in his passion while serving God at the same time, Wishnu joined the cast with sheer excitement. He feels that the story gave him greater understanding of Paul’s journey from a lost man to a renowned apostle.

BA

Bong Bong Alegre, Stephen

Bong Bong Alegre, 28, tries his utmost best to give justice to each and every role he plays but, to him, the role of Stephen is special and personal. Bong Bong feels that Stephen’s belief in God is unmeasureable, incomparable, pure and calm, yet full of conviction and pride. With this in mind, he is motivated to adopt Stephen's persona as his own.

Bong Bong, 28, is a software engineer in a local IT company. Happily married with a beautiful baby daughter and a loving wife, the family of three has been living in Singapore for over two years.

Before Paul (his theatrical debut), he has done numerous singing, modelling and acting engagements both in his home country, the Philippines, as well as in Singapore.

For Bong Bong, all the hardwork and long hours of practice are considered trivial as he is doing all of it for the love of God. He wishes to thank his family's never-ending guidance and every one who has continuously supported his family and him in many ways.

BQ

Bui Quang Khoi, Klein, Timothy

Bui Quang Khoi, Klein, 22, plays the role of Timothy, one of the beloved disciples of Paul in his life of evangelisation. He is now completing his Bachelor’s degree in Business at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU)."

Classically trained by an opera artist in Vietnam before coming to Singapore, Klein was determined to get a place in the Music Conservatory of Ho Chi Minh city. After much deliberation, he decided to leave everything behind and started his studies at NTU. However, his love for opera never ceased.

Klein discovered his passion for musicals when he made his debut appearance in “The Beggars’ Party” in 2007, a production by the Catholic Student Apostolate of NTU, where he starred in the leading ensemble.

Besides studying, Klein spends most of his spare time with music and movies. He enjoys mostly film adaptations from famous novels such as The Godfather and Les Miserables. He also joined the NTU Choir as a bass and took part in some singing contests organised by the Vietnamese Society in NTU.

As part of the cast of Paul the Musical, Klein wishes to contribute his best to the success of this production. He greatly appreciates every moment being with other cast and crew members, no matter how tough the process may get.

Acting and singing never fail to give him thrills and he hopes that the audience will feel the same way.

AL

Constance Png, Lydia

Constance works as a clinical psychologist by day but is actually a closet theatre actress at heart. Passionate about theatre productions since young, she has been involved in dramas created by The Necessary Stage, TheatreWorks and NUS.

Initially inspired to participate in Paul the Musical as a way to rejuvenate her youthful spirit, she has subsequently discovered more in the process, including spiritual growth, a love for music and a sense of fellowship with the many talented individuals who have made this musical possible.

Most of her spare time is spent enjoying the company of her family and friends, whether that is celebrating Mass together in church or catching up over sashimi and glasses of red wine.

Constance also enjoys travelling, scuba diving, reading and the occupational hazard of people watching. Having lived in Sydney, Australia, for several years she returned to Singapore in late 2006 and now lives with her husband Chris and their adorable cat (who thinks he’s a dog), Benji, in Tiong Bahru.

FE

Felicia, Slave Girl

While Felicia has always been a person of many interests, one of her biggest passion in life is music. In the midst of her hectic work schedule, she finds time to conduct the Seraphim Indonesian Youth Choir and sing at numerous weddings.

During her university days, she was involved in several musical productions in which she always played stereotypical roles. In Paul the Musical, she found an intriguing and challenging role - the Slave Girl - and decided to audition for it despite lacking the stereotypical helpless and vulnerable qualities.

Thrilled to have been chosen to play the part, Felicia is currently working hard to live up to expectations. Though she feels that it is challenging, one of her biggest asset is her unwavering conviction that God will support her in whatever she does in His name. We can surely expect to see her playing her role whole-heartedly.

Felicia is steadfast and faithful in whatever she does, be it in her work, in her involvement in Choice Weekend (of which she is an avid fan), in her choir and, most importantly, in being God’s servant.

CK

Brendon Liew, Nero

The ‘forever 25’ Brendon is one of the first few Theatre Studies graduates from NUS. Prior to Paul the Musical, Brendon had been involved in several theatrical productions including Feast of Life, a musical also staged by St Mary of The Angels, in commemeration of the opening of its new (and current) premises in 2003.

Apart from theatre, Brendon has worked extensively in the music industry, composing and arranging for the Mandarin, Indonesian and Singaporean markets during his 3-year tenure with Universal Music. He now runs his own web development firm.

In his free time, Brendon enjoys daydreaming, playing snooker, as well as collecting (and drinking) wine.

Like his character Nero, Brendon is currently in the process of buiding up his harem. To date, he has only managed to achieve one wife and one son.

BL

Benedict Lo, Sadducee

Benedict Lo, 17, has had prior experience in the theatre scene but found this particular journey through Paul the Musical unique and fun. Through it, he has gained a whole new perspective on the bible and a greater understanding of Paul whose great deeds have enlightened a multitude about Jesus, as well as brought them closer to God and to their faith.

Most importantly, being in this musical has given Benedict a greater spiritual thirst and has made him realise how distant he was from God. This has, in turn, given Benedict a new drive to seek God and strengthen his faith. He has also met many great people and has made lots of new friends from the intense, yet enjoyable, rehearsals thus far.

Of the many songs in Paul the Musical, Benedict’s favourite is Alone. This song portrays a person who has no one to turn to, but who then meets two strangers who help him through all his trouble. Uplifting and inspiring, this song encourages those who are feeling down not to be afraid to hold out their hands for help.

Benedict would like to take this opportunity to thank Anthony for creating such depth in the music pieces, Dennis for his patience and guidance and Lianne who is ever around to get them together and give them support. Benedict would also like to thanks his parents, friends, fellow actors and crew members for their understanding and support.

James Teng, Pharisee

Since young, James has always had an interest in musicals, drama, acting and singing. As a result he joined Colours of Faith, St Mary’s visual arts ministry.

As a member, he has taken part in drama and acting roles in the parish’s Christmas Pageant 2007 and also in the 2008 and 2009 Passion Plays. Paul the Musical is the first professional musical that he is taking part in.

Despite playing a minor role in the musical, he is enjoying the experience, especially since it involves working with such a large cast.

TD

Thomas Daniel, Pharisee

Thomas Daniel was born and raised in Indonesia before moving to Singapore in 2005. Growing up with a passion in music (and blessed with the talent), he taught himself to play numerous musical instruments including the guitar, drums and the keyboard.

He developed an interest in musicals since watching The Phantom of The Opera and has long considered gaining more musical experience to fulfill one of his passions. His first experience was in a musical drama about King David set in the present, produced by the Indonesian Catholic Charismatic Group (KKIHS) in 2006.

When he is not rehearsing for Paul the Musical, Thomas is actively serving the Lord through other means. He is currently a drummer with KKIHS, based in the Church of The Holy Spirit. He is also an active member of the AmoreDio bible sharing group.

Paul the Musical will be Thomas’s second and biggest musical so far. He would like to thank God for the opportunity to praise Him through this musical as well as the directors, producer, the cast and crew for putting their trust in him.

Finally, he hopes that St Paul’s life story will open the eyes and hearts of all who watch the performance and that they will come to realise that God’s love is so great - nothing is impossible for Him.

JE

Jennifer Ebron, Lydia's Mother

Jennifer Ebron, a senior systems analyst, is a happy wife and mother of a 7-year-old girl and 2-year-old twins. She loves cooking and is a big fan of Korean TV series. Though without any professional training, she has joined singing competitions, school plays and her church choir and has also performed at office parties and corporate events. Jennifer had her first theatre and song-writing experience when she entered college.

She first arrived in Singapore in 2006 for work purposes, but decided to spend her spare time doing what she loves doing. She participated in the Yellow Chair Production play Brothers in 2007, became one of the grand finalist of the prestigious Search for the Philippine Idol 2008 in Singapore and performed at the Esplanade Open Amphitheatre in December 2008.

Her first big splash in theatre was when she played the lead role in The Tales of Three Marias, a story about Filipinos overseas, written and directed by Singapore-based Filipino actor, Jay Espano. After working with Jay, she was invited to sing with him at his first solo concert It’s My Turn. She is also a member of Psalmideo Chorale, a group of talented and professional Filipinos whose passion is to sing for God and His people.

Now playing the role of Paul’s Wife, she would like to continue her love of music and theatre by singing and acting.

JS

Jocelyn Suarez, Philipian

Jocelyn is a strange 18-year-old student who gamely auditioned for Paul the Musical with neither musical nor theatrical experience. Novice that she is, she is excited, albeit anxious, in being part of such a novel event.

What she admires most in this experience is not only the ability to assume a minor role that still adds to the reality and gravity of the whole performance, but more so, being able to attest to the great spirit, commitment and faith that was immensely portrayed by all the cast and crew, especially the three “originals” (i.e. Lianne, Dennis and Anthony). Here are determination and hard work that build great cities, no less musicals.

Being part of this musical was a spiritual growth experience. For her, to be able to partake with it by sight is honour and pleasure enough, but to be part of it is something that indeed marks memory.

Jocelyn loves the solace of a book more than the companionship of a person. Her ambition in life is to be a writer and she tries hard not to slip into total eccentricity.

SI

Stella Maris Irawan, Philippian

Stella is a 14 year-old studying her second year at ACS (International) and has loved theatre and drama since the day she could talk. She has been performing since she entered Kindergarten. Stella is excited to the point of insanity to be part of Paul the Musical.

To date she has performed for her former Ballet group in their remake of a dance from the musical Cats, acted as a hyper-active student in her school drama performance, and danced in her school’s play Passion of Dreams. She is also the class ‘drama queen’ and loves to make people laugh till they wet their pants.

Of all the amazing songs in Paul the Musical, Stella’s favourite would have to be Do you Want to Know for its interesting fusion of genres and its great tune. Stella would like to tell Anthony that she really appreciates his gift to make such beautiful music in no time.

When she is not at rehearsals, you can find Stella procrastinating in front of the computer, then springing out of her seat to do her wretched chemistry homework, where she will balance equations while listening to cheesy Korean boy band music.

Josephine Kok, Roman

Recently graduated with a B.Sc. in Economics, Josephine, 23, is the younger of two sisters. Growing up, she always had an interest and fascination towards music and theatre and would follow her parents and sister to watch musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables.

Ask her about entertainment news and music and Josephine never fails to provide the information. She was known as a walking “entertainment-guru” during her junior college years. She started directing plays for her secondary school talent-time competition, in which she eventually won first runner-up, choreographed her school’s ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously) Day workout and even tried out acting when she was in primary four. She participated in a Christian musical Forgiving Eyes, where she played the boy Jesus.

Now Josephine embarks on her next journey, taking this time to explore her artistic side - from composing songs to writing short stories. Josephine takes her inspirations from herself and the people around her. She hopes and dreams to be given the opportunity to work in the entertainment or theatre industry in the future.

MC

Marcus Chow, Temple Guard

Marcus, a parishioner of St Mary’s, has been serving the music ministry since 2002. He enjoys a good game of chess, has a love for sports - particularly soccer and badminton - and has a passion for the performing arts. He also enjoys the beauty of nature and slow walks along the beach. The 31-year-old has a degree in Journalism and works in the advertising industry.

Marcus joined Paul the Musical because he wanted to be a part of something uniquely Catholic. The hardest thing for him is to juggle work, family and friends amidst the many sessions and long hours of rehearsal, but feels that it is all worth the while.

Through the participation in this musical, he has made many wonderful friends and has seen that there is nothing that cannot be accomplished when God is at the centre of it all.

Marcus believes that in life, every person has a role to play, and every role is just as important, regardless of how big or small it is - just like the many amazing talents he has had the honour to work with in the musical.

PL

Peter Lin, Temple Guard

For as long as he can remember, Peter Lin has always wanted to be the titular character in The Phantom of the Opera. He grabbed the chance to perform Music of the Night at 13 at a church camp and since then, musical theatre has always been a part of his life.

Today, half a lifetime later, Peter has honed his craft in several parish and school productions (mostly original works) and has tried his hand not just at performing but also directing, scriptwriting and songwriting, though he will be first to admit that he still has a lot to learn.

Offstage, Peter leads a double-life. By day, he is a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate at Nanyang Technological University. During the weekends, he can be found in his parish church of the Holy Family, where he is a lector and is heavily involved in youth ministry.

A self-proclaimed Facebook addict, Star Trek fan and Marvel Comics geek, Peter possesses the mutant ability to spend hours without sleep before an LCD screen and actually used this otherwise pointless skill once to win a television set in a competition back in 2004.

Kimberly Arriola, Antioch Christian

Kimberly, 17, is very proud to be a Filipino although she does not know much about her culture, having been raised in Singapore. Being the third child in a family of four siblings, she says that she is pretty much the attention-seeker.

In her free time, she enjoys chatting on MSN, shopping and singing. With a great passion for drama, she is currently waiting to start her first year in Singapore Polytechnic, studying Applied Drama and Psychology, and hopes to make acting a full-time profession in future.

Kimberly is delighted to be part of the Paul the Musical cast which she describes as a “super, fantastic, awesome experience”. While she is not a parishioner at St Mary’s, she feels the cast has been really friendly to her, which has made her feel very welcomed. Those with whacky characters never fail to trigger her giggles.

Although rehearsals can get really gruelling sometimes, Kimberly knows that God is guiding them and that they will be able to put up a realistic re-enactment of the story of Paul.

Dawn Lim, Slave Girl / Nero Girl

Dawn is delighted to have been given a new lease of life doubling up as a salacious slave girl and a coquettish Nero chick. She never thought her two left feet could ever be of coordinated service to the Lord. Indeed, the Lord works in mysterious ways. She is finding new ways to swivel those God-given hips and wonders how she managed the past 27 years without figuring that out.

This is the second Catholic musical production that Dawn is involved in - the first, when at the tender age of 16, she was dressed as a man. She is thankful that she does not have to cross-dress in Paul the Musical and thanks the Lord everyday for the little blessings that being female brings.

Outside of work and musical rehearsals, Dawn loves listening to a good live band and bopping to eighties music (shamelessly)… with good company and excellent food, of course!

Diane Hong, Slave Girl / Nero Girl

Diane started learning music at a very young age and developed her interests and passion in music and singing since then. Besides music, she has a variety of interests and hobbies including photography, rock-climbing, playing Scrabble, reading and travelling.

During her free time, she also enjoys playing video games and has worked as a game programmer before. She is currently working with Lucasfilm Animation Singapore (who created the Star Wars: The Clone Wars Animated TV Series) as a production coordinator.

Four years back, Diane was brought to St Ignatius by her close friend to join the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) course. A year after, she was baptised as a Catholic and is now a part of the Sunset Mass choir at St Ignatius.

Although she has had some stage performance experience, this is her very first participation in a musical and she finds her roles challenging, yet interesting.

Feeling grateful and excited, Diane is glad to have this opportunity to be part of the cast of Paul the Musical, joining other Catholic fellows to tell the story of one of the greatest saints in history.

Samantha Ng, Slave Girl / Nero Girl

Samantha describes herself as a pilgrim of hope and believes in bringing good cheer and smiles to the faces of others - life is a gift not to be taken for granted! She feels that acting as a slave girl in this musical has been both challenging and fun!

As a current final year undergraduate at the Singapore Management University (SMU), she gives thanks for the daily unfolding of life’s journey as she gets to understand herself better and where God is leading her.

Samantha enjoys talking and listening to people’s lives and learning from them. She believes in the importance of balance - to have the courage to pursue your dreams, and to be open and aware of every experience encountered.

Singing, dancing and growing are some of her passions and “me times” are spent swimming, reading, reflecting and babysitting her god-daughters. She is easily contented with bak chor mee with lots of vinegar and chilli and, time to time, anything with durian brings her ultimate happiness!

Above all, she holds her parents, the Church of the Holy Spirit family and the Fides (SMU’s Catholic Community) ladies close to her heart, for they are the people who give her greater reason and meaning to want to be a better person, a better daughter of God.

Enya Lim, Slave Girl / Nero Girl

Enya started to love singing from a young age and has been in and out of choirs since she was 10 years old. She was involved with St Margaret's primary and secondary school choirs and participated in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging in 2000, 2002 and 2005.

In a bid to expand her choral experience, Enya joined a choir at the Church of St Ignatius in 2006 and has not looked back on that decision ever since. Singing for mass led to cantoring and, by late 2007, Enya had begun singing for weddings.

Besides being a chorister, Enya has had some exposure in performing for events and gigs. She is keen to further explore her vocal capabilities and the accompanying possibilities.

Upon moving to St Mary of the Angels in the second half of 2008 and catching wind of Paul the Musical, she signed up for the auditions (after a little convincing). Broadway and musicals have always been a favourite genre for Enya and Paul the Musical will be her first time participating in such an undertaking.

Fiona Lim, Backup Singer

Fiona joined the River Valley High School Choir when she was 13 and, ever since, it has sparked off her passion for singing. She has been with a number of choirs including the National Junior College ChoirandNTU CAC Choir.

In 2002, she participated in an inter-tertiary competition, Rhapsody in which her a cappella group, “Perfect Fifth”, won the group category. In addition, she also likes solo-singing as shown from her participation in Talentime, a competition organised by the National Junior College, where she was the runner-up under the Solo category.

On top of singing, Fiona discovered her interest in theatre during her university days. In 2005, she was involved in a musical organised by the NTU CAC Choir in which she played the role of a nerd who eventually transformed into a temptress.

The role of the back-up singer in Paul the Musical is another exciting chapter for Fiona. It is a test for her vocals as well as a spiritual journey for her faith.

Francis & John Leong, Saul's Children

Francis is currently a Secondary One student at St Joseph’s Institution. He likes to read and plays the electone in his free time.

He was first introduced to the stage in Primary Three, during an inter-class Chinese skit competition. Francis immensely enjoyed the experience, and has since been involved in stage drama.

He took part in the Heritage Play for the ‘Asia Pacific Lasellian Youth Congress 2007’, as well as St Mary’s Christmas play last year. Francis has also acted in the upcoming MediaCorp production Police and Thief and was the first runner-up in last December’s St Mary’s Idol.

Though his role in Paul the Musical is minor, he is elated to be part of this big production and is determined to put in his best effort. Despite having to juggle schoolwork and rehearsals, he is enjoying every minute of it and as well as working with the team.

2009 is a busy year for John because he is sitting for his PSLE and participating in Paul the Musical, of which he is honoured to be part of.

John has been a member of St Anthony’s Primary School Choir since he was eight where he developed a strong passion for singing. His school choir has taught him the techniques of singing as well as discipline, commitment in choir training and team spirit.

Last year, John participated in the Singapore Youth Festival Singing Competition, undeterred by a high fever. Though his choir only clinched a Silver Award, all members of the choir put in their best effort and their team spirit was extremely strong.

Besides singing, John loves acting and dancing, notably acting in MediaCorp productions Incredible Tales and Police and Thief.

In December 2007, John had the opportunity to be involved in the Heritage Play for SJI Asia Pacific La Salle Congress by the La Salle Centre. That was where he kindled his first love for stage performance.

John is always eager to attend Paul the Musical rehearsals as he has made many new friends, learnt many valuable lessons and is definitely enjoying every moment of it!
