Society of St. Vincent De Paul
The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SSVP), one of the oldest charitable social and humanitarian organisations, is seen today as a huge international movement of the apostolate of charity and social action. The Society's purpose is to provide direct aid to those who suffer, and to help individuals reduce and even eliminate the causes of the suffering themselves.
SSVP members use their own resources, sharing not only possessions but the valuable gift of their presence, bearing witness to the fraternal love of Christ among the poorest. In attending to the needy and suffering, we minister to Jesus himself. Assistance, whether material, educational, emotional or spiritual, is offered to each individual in a spirit of compassion, respect and dignity.
The Conference of St. Mary of the Angels started in August 1970 and is now a mixed Conference with 16 members. The Society reaches out to some 46 families by providing monthly rations of essential food items and cash on the first Sunday morning of each month, financial assistance with children's school text books and school fees and additional "ang pows" and other gifts during the festive periods of Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Christmas. Excursions and get-togethers are also organised for the adopted families.
SSVP members also reach out to the aged and chronically ill through visits to various homes like St. Joseph, Villa Francis, Missionaries of Charities, Cheshire Home, etc to render assistance and provide essential items.
