Hello
not sure whether this has been posted before, in case it
has, forgive my ignorance to search, and pls give me the link to the
previous posts.
In the situation that a friend is contemplating to
leave the Church because of some of her teaching, in particular, on
Homosexuality... what will u do? what to say to him/her?
Best regards
Maggy
Maybe, we can say that they are not alone. There are other people, catholic, who experience what they experience. You might want to refer them to Courage Apostolate, which is approved by the Church: http://couragerc.net, the website presents 5 goals of this apostolate:
- Live
chaste lives in accordance with the
Roman Catholic Church's teaching on homosexuality. (Chastity)
- Dedicate
ones life to Christ through
service to others, spiritual reading, prayer, meditation,
individual
spiritual direction, frequent attendance at Mass, and the
frequent
reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy
Eucharist. (Prayer
and Dedication)
- Foster a
spirit of fellowship in which
all may share thoughts and experiences, and so ensure that
no one
will have to face the problems of homosexuality alone. (Fellowship)
- Be
mindful of the truth that chaste
friendships are not only possible but necessary in a chaste
Christian life
and in doing so provide encouragement to one another in
forming and
sustaining them. (Support)
- Live lives that may serve as good examples to others. (Good Example/Role Model)
The official teaching on the homosexuality can be found in the CCC paragraph 2357-2359. You can go to: http://www.vatican.va/archive/catechism/p3s2c2a6.htm to read them.
Another good reference is a book by Christopher "Good News about Sex and Marriage". There you will find a question about homosexuality. contrary to public opinion, West argued that many people thought they have a homosexual tendency, while actually they are not. he explained why sometimes we are attracted to the same sex due to their attributes which we wish to possess. This does not always mean the person is a homosexual. He also clarified the term that often misleading, and he also gave suggestions for these people that liberates them, it's a good news anyway :) Btw we have the book in the library: http://stmary.sg/emmaus/library/books/good-news-about-sex-and-marriage .
In any case, we should show our support and loving care to them, that they too can live up their call to a chaste lives, as we are all called to :)
Is your friend sure that his/her understanding about the church teaching is the correct one? A lot of people disagree with church teaching without knowing the teaching itself.
I guess the easiest way to learn about the church teaching about sexuality is to watch/read the Theology of the Body DVD/book.

I am not quite sure about it so please ask that friend what is the teaching of the Church.
